I'm a life-long procrastinator who spent twenty years polishing up the same story. With a loving push from friends and family, I finally walked into a local Romance Writers of America meeting to find out how to submit my work to a publisher.
I almost couldn't do it. I'm irrationally intimidated by women in hats, and one of the members was wearing a snazzy little red number that practically shouted PROFESSIONAL WRITER. I was afraid they'd laugh me out of the room for daring to think my writing could be taken seriously.
Lucky for me, they were a great bunch of people who made me feel right at home.
They also helped me to see all the things I was doing wrong, like having no conflict and no plot! With the help of a strong critique group and generous fellow writers, I began to understand just how a book ought to be structured. A year later I won the Golden Heart from Romance Writers of America for Best Short Contemporary of 1989.
I sold my first book, SEASON OF THE HEART, to Meteor Kismet, a line that has since gone out of business--and no, I didn't have anything to do with that! My second book, FLAMINGO MOON, the winner of the Golden Heart, was sold to Silhouette Intimate Moments.
It took me a while to figure out just what kind of books I liked to write. Eventually I found a home selling regularly to Harlequin Superromance. The people there are terrific. You couldn't find a nicer bunch to work with. You can check out a few of the past books I've written for them under BOOKSHELF.
These days I'm able to write about one book a year. I swear I'm not a slow writer, just a slow typist.
I was lucky enough to get a four-book contract with Superomance, the Heart of the Rockies series. It's about a big Italian family who own a resort high in the Colorado Rockies and love to meddle in each other's love lives.
Since the end of that series, I've stuck closer to home by writing THE MISSING MOM, a book about an aquarium designer who lives in Florida. She's thrown together with an old lover who has a big secret from their past--one that he'd do anything to keep her from discovering.
Now that Missing Mom is behind me, I'm concentrating on the follow up book that Harlequin has just bought--Zack and Alaina's story. I hope you'll keep an eye out for it next year.
